Why is wood the 5th-anniversary gift — and why does a koa cuff nail it?

Five years in, tradition says the gift is wood…no one knows why..hallmark was asleep that day. It's a lovely idea until you're actually standing in a store wondering what wooden thing a person could possibly want. A bowl? A cutting board? That's where a koa cuff quietly wins: it's wood, it's beautiful, and it's something she'll wear instead of set on a shelf.

What makes the Eternity Cuff special?

We use only Hawaiian “curly” koa — the most rare grain pattern that ripples and shifts in the light as her wrist moves. Less than 1% of koa has it and we hand-finish every piece in our Honolulu shop to bring that shimmer out. Many of the cuffs pair the koa with abalone, so there's a flash of ocean color against the warm wood.

Alright, I’ll bite, what’s the symbolic meaning?

The obvious is the eternity symbol shape…. The figure 8 shape is clearly a reference to the enduring love and journey of your relationship.  The abalone carries deep spiritual meaning across many Polynesian cultures and represents water, emotional balance and ancestral connection…a calming force lending to emotional healing.  The Koa tree represents strength…the inner courage of character and the outward determination of grit.  If you haven't found the need for these elements in your relationship yet, it’s coming…I guarantee it.

Will it fit her — and how do I choose?

The nice thing about a cuff is that it's forgiving on the sizing— there's an opening in the front, so it doesn't have to be exact like a ring.  It always surprises me but about 2/3 of the orders are for the small.  It looks tiny to me but fits the majority of women.  The opening is adjustable… I’ve found the best way to size it is to pinch the center of the back and slightly bend it together..  The key is to avoid bending the section where the inlays are..they can pop out if you are too aggressive.  This makes it way easier than trying to guess a ring size.

How do I care for a koa cuff?

A little care keeps the koa and abalone looking their best for years…to be honest, I design it to be lifeproof… theres not much to do on the maintenance front.  Just wash it off after swimming in the ocean…keep chemicals off of the epoxy and your good to go.  

Is it only for anniversaries?

Not at all — the wood-anniversary angle is just the most obvious. It delights equally for  birthdays or as a Mother's Day gift.  I’ve noticed another trend as a “missing the islands” gift…maybe Hawaii was home and you had to leave for greener pastures…or grew up here and are stuck on the mainland.  If it’s in your soul, it resonates.   Anytime you want to give someone a literal piece of Hawaii they can carry with them, the cuff does the job. Yes — every design is drawn by hand and prototyped in our Honolulu shop, where the curly koa is also hand-finished. We started the koa-tungsten ring trend more than 13 years ago and have designed every ring since, rather than ordering shapes from a factory.

Places on the islands. The faceted ring echoes the Big Island's fresh lava fields, the black-tungsten-and-mother-of-pearl design comes from the black sand beach at Miloliʻi, and the sandblasted gunmetal is color-matched to the lava outside Kona. Each design is a small nod to somewhere in Hawaii.

The flat-top ring with beveled edges. It was our first design and it's still the most protective for the wood and resin — you'd almost have to scratch straight down the center to cause a problem. The bevel also catches the light and shows off the curl.

8mm is our most versatile men's width, 6mm is a true unisex size that suits almost everyone, and our thinner 3–4mm rings lean more delicate and stack well with other rings. We can vary the koa channel width without changing the ring width to shift the look.

The 3mm and 4mm designs are the most popular for women — thin, clean, and elegant on a smaller hand, with a bright sliver of curly koa (and a Pacific-blue mother-of-pearl option on the 4mm). The 6mm rounded band is also a great unisex wedding ring.

That shimmer is called chatoyance — the wavy, tiger-stripe grain of curly koa reflects light differently as it curves, so the wood appears to ripple and shift as your hand moves. Less than 1% of koa has this figure, which is why we use it in every ring.
