We're always tinkering and trying new things here in the shop...sometimes it blows up spectacularly and sometimes we create a magic little nugget. These turned out pretty magic and we love the combination of earth and sea. The abalone comes from Maui and is responsibly harvested. The Koa of course comes from private ranches on the Big Island from dead or dying trees....so...this doesn't have to be your guilty pleasure.
We've attached all this awesomeness to our standard slim design case...our most popular for good reason. All of the protection without the bulk. We are proud to have our phone cases carried in over 50 stores throughout Hawaii. These however are only available on the website as the abalone and Koa combination is too difficult and expensive to make.
...sure it's amazing looking but that's just the start of it's story. We source our Koa from fallen or dying trees from private ranches on the Big Island of Hawaii. The curly grain pattern is the most rare and expensive and we use only the most beautiful (and therefore expensive). The current log we are using cost more than my truck...and it's a pretty nice truck. I personally hand sand, finish, etch, cut, ink and assemble all the cases going out of our shop. Hopefully this year I learn to delegate.
Last year I personally made over seven thousand phone cases...that's not a typo. During those efforts, I've learned a few things more than how to relieve aching finger pain and the marvels of watching Netflix into the wee hours of the morning. I found the case that everybody loves...it's not too thick, plenty of bounce if dropped, gripies (that's the technical term) on the side, and a protective lip for the front side. It's everything you need and nothing you don't.
Check out the video below. The islands are calling...answer already. No really, this is all I got. It's time to pull the trigger.
The Koa and Abalone combo phone case looks excellent. Not only does it look great, but it’s also functional. It fits perfectly on my phone and has enough of an edge around the screen that I can sit the phone face down without the screen touching the surface below. This is great for reducing the chances of scratching or cracking the screen for our typically ($1000+) smartphones. We invest a chunk of money into our phones so why not spend less than $50 more to protect the phone and make it look truly unique? I love the fact that no two cases are exactly alike. This ensures that even if someone picked the same model of case, you will each have a different look that is as unique as we all are. This was my second case to buy from Pono Woodworks and the older one is still kicking. I got a new phone since my older one died and knew from the second I ordered the phone that I’d be looking to Pono Woodworks for the new case. Luckily, they created the Koa & Abalone combo which is the most stunning case I’ve seen from them yet. It’s truly as beautiful as the islands of Hawai’i. I’ll be back for sure when I need a new one and will definitely recommend Pono Woodworks to friends, family, and co-workers. Big mahalo to Brett and the Pono Woodworks crew. Keep up the great work!
The phone case I ordered was beautiful, and Brett even made a custom adjustment for me regarding the design! The anticipation of receiving it made me wish shipping was faster (but that's expected from HI). The case is functioning well, as my phone has survived a couple small distances drops/falls. I wish the power and volume buttons had a cutout instead of being covered, but they operate okay through the case. The extra grips/texture on the sides of the case minimize slips/drops. Side note - I appreciate the humorous, clever marketing and aloha spirit with each email & in the package!
Great quality work, beautiful case. I am very hard on my phone cases and this thing has held up to all of my abuse including cleaning it often with sanitizing agents. This is my second case and I will definitely get my third phone case here.
Love, love it!! I had a Koa case on my old phone and had to have another for my new phone. Spiritual.
